Smaller-Sized, Low Cost Tablets = Boost in Market Share

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has increased its forecast of the 2013 tablet sales thanks much in part to the number of lower-priced, smaller-sized devices that are now on the market. Their forecast has increased by nearly 20 million units, from 172.4 million to 190.9 million units for this year alone.

Android and iOS still remain on top controlling a majority of the market share. Android is at 48.8% while iOS is at 46%. Windows, Windows RT and other operating systems close out the market share just above 5%. In the next 4 years, IDC forecast that tablet sales will reach 350 million units and although the numbers may shift a small bit between operating systems, Android and iOS will remain in control of the market share.

Although this is positive news for the tablet market share, this will have a detrimental effect on the eReader share. Their market share is expected to drop 14% in the next three years.

We’re not surprised that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are growing at an incredible rate. Users vary from all ages and locations across the globe and we believe this will hold true for years to come. We want to know, how many of you use a tablet? If so, what kind? Let us know in the comments!
