World’s First Braille Smartphone

I was surprised to find out that the very first braille smartphone is just now being developed. Smartphones have been a staple of our lives for over 6 years, so why are we only now tapping into that market that has 285 million visually impaired people worldwide that includes 39 million who are blind.

Braille Smartphone – Mashable

Sumit Dagar is in the process of developing this incredible smartphone with the collaboration of IIT Dehli and testing though the LV Prasad Eye Institute. The smartphone has a screen that is made of a grid of pins that can move in different direction to create different Braille characters and shapes when the user receives an email or text message. The phone uses a technology called Shape Memory Alloy, which allows the pins to expand outwards and then contracts back inward to its original flat shape.

I think this is such an incredible advancement for both the smartphone market as well as those who are visually impaired. Dagar’s hope is to have the phone on the market by the end of this year at a cost of $185.
