iPhone 5 (Finally) Released

After last year’s hype for an iPhone 5, which ultimately resulted in the iPhone 4S, Apple has finally released one.

It’s thinner, lighter, faster, and more powerful than any phone Apple has ever made. Although other smart phones have also been improving, analysts think that the iPhone 5 will keep Apple in the lead.

Charles Golvin, one such analyst from Forrester Research, believes that Apple has the strongest “gravitational field of loyalty.” He is among those who believe that the iPhone 5 will increase this “magnetic pull.” We have to agree that Apple fanboys (and girls) are some of the most loyal, vocal fans any company has.

Although Apple actually lost iPhone sales due to customers waiting for the release of the iPhone 5, the predictions of sales are in the tens of millions.

Pricing is said to start at $199 with a 2 year contract. If you’re looking to get your hands on one ASAP, you can pre-order starting Friday. The actual date you can buy the phone will be September 21.

Of course, Apple employees are singing the iPhone 5’s praises. “iPhone 5 is the best phone we’ve ever made,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president for worldwide marketing, said as he introduced the device during a splashy invitation-only event in San Francisco.

So what are the specs for the new iPhone 5?

  • 2x faster processor
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • 18% thinner
  • 20% lighter (about 4oz)
  • 4 inch retina-display screen
  • Widescreen aspect ratio
  • Available in Black or White
  • Siri updates – including understanding sports scores
  • Improved battery life
  • Updates to both cameras
  • 720p high-definition video from the front camera
  • Ability to take panoramic photos
  • Revamped earbuds (now called “EarPods”)
And one feature that the public won’t be thrilled about:
  • A new cable charger called Lightning that is 80% smaller than the current charging docks. Don’t be too sad though, Apple is selling an adapter so that your new iPhone 5 can use the previous charging cables…
The new camera specs:
  • improved low-light performance
  • noise reduction
  • 40 percent faster photo capture

During today’s presentation in San Francisco, Apple marketing exec Phil Schiller additionally described a few other features in the iPhone 5’s new camera, such as a sapphire crystal lens cover (for supposedly clearer pictures), hybrid infrared filter, five-element lens construction, and f/2.4 aperture capabilities. Here’s an image taken with one:
