In Less Than A Year. . .

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) predicts mobile phones will outnumber human beings. That means there will be 7 billion + mobile devices worldwide. That’s an incredible figure because just this past January, we shared with you that mobile devices had just reached 6 billion.

Mobile penetration rates are at an all-time high, currently at 96%. Developed countries account for 128% while developing countries account for 89%.

Brahima Sanou, director of the ITU development bureau said, “Every day we are moving closer to having almost as many mobile-cellular subscriptions as people on earth. This is exciting news. The mobile revolution is m-powering people in developing countries by delivering ICT applications in education, health, government, banking, environment and business. Let us all celebrate this mobile miracle that I have no doubt will hasten our pace towards sustainable development.”

I find it astonishing that there are over 100 countries with 100%+ mobile-cellular penetration and seven countries have penetration over 200%. China holds the top spot with over 1 billion mobile subscriptions and India just trailing behind, almost at the 1 billion mark.

Even though mobile devices will outnumber people by this time next year, that does not mean every person will own a cellphone. It simply means that there are a significant number of people that own more than 1 device. I am curious to see what the mobile-cellular penetration will be, come a decade from now. I can only hope all people across the globe, especially those in developing countries, will have the opportunity to be connected and have access to cellular devices (if they want to be).
