iOS vs. Android | Somehow, Microsoft Wins!

The mobile phone wars are crazy. Apple and Google are clearly leaders in the smartphone world. Apple makes money on iOS software as well as hardware. Google, on the other hand does not manufacture hardware; instead, it leaves this to a variety of manufacturers like Motorola, LG, Samsung, etc. Microsoft is in the same boat as Google, but has some hedged bets on the Android platform.

It turns out that Android uses some Microsoft-patented technologies (exact specs are confidential, but speculation is that sync and processing are patented by Microsoft). Device manufacturers pay anywhere from $5 to $15 per Android handset sold. Not bad considering Android sales in the US alone are expected to top 25 million handsets. If Android wins, Microsoft wins; if WP7 wins, Microsoft wins. Not bad…
