40% of the World are ONLINE

The United Nations just released a report that in just a few short months, 40% of the world or 2.7 billion people will have online access, much in part to mobile broadband.

As we have mentioned before, also by the end of 2013, the International Telecommuncation Union (ITU) projects that there will be 6.8 billion cellular subscriptions, so nearly a phone for every person on Earth.

The ICT Development Index was also released which ranks 157 countries on levels of ICT access including skills and use. If you take a look at the map below, you can see that a majority of the world is above 2.33. Leaders of the ICT Index include: Republic of Korea, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Netherlands, the UK, Luxembourg and China.

There is no doubt that there has been a significant increase in mobile-cellular subscriptions and online access on a global scale, however, as you can see from the ICT Index, there is still a gap that needs to be bridged for people of developing countries. Apple just released the 5c in hopes of shaking up the emerging market and I’m sure others will soon follow. I believe the young people of developing countries will have the greatest force in bringing online and mobile connectivity to the masses and be able to close the gap once and for all. Brahima Sanou, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau has said,“Young people are the most enthusiastic adopters and users of ICTs. They are the ones who will shape the direction of our industry in the coming decades, and their voice needs to be heard.”

We’re excited to see people from all walks of life and from all corners of the Earth are connected through cellular devices and internet access. What do you think about these massive numbers? Let us know in the comments!
